Commento:

The frugal meal era originariamente intitolato Intérieur de village. Con questo titolo fu elencato nei registri di vendita della filiale dell'Aia dei commercianti d'arte Goupil ed esposto per la prima volta al Salon di Parigi del 1876. I critici lodarono la scelta di Israëls per questo semplice soggetto. Uno di loro fu particolarmente colpito dal modo affascinante in cui il pittore rappresentava i bambini, separati dai loro genitori e assorbiti nel loro mondo. L'anno successivo, quando il quadro fu esposto al Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, portava il titolo attuale. Nei Paesi Bassi, tuttavia, il dipinto era conosciuto come Schoenmakersfamilie aan het middagmaal, letteralmente 'La famiglia del calzolaio al pasto di mezzogiorno'. Questo titolo fu presumibilmente assegnato dall'artista stesso. Il riferimento alla famiglia di un calzolaio rende probabile che l'interno raffigurato sia un cottage nel villaggio brabantino di Dongen. Questo villaggio ha ispirato le diverse versioni di Israëls di una famiglia di artigiani a cena.
