Commento:

Jules Bastien-Lepage ha spesso dipinto i contadini della sua città natale di Damvillers nel nord-est della Francia. Qui una ragazzina, la 'bambina selvaggia' del titolo, con pazienza e in silenzio custodisce una mucca. Bastien fa sì che la ragazza sembri isolata, tanto sola nello sterile paesaggio invernale, rimpicciolita di fronte ad un alto cardo e un albero senza foglie. Dai suoi occhi ammalianti traspare un sentimento di tristezza, mentre tira a sé i suoi stracci cercando così di trattenere il calore del suo corpicino.
